Personalized Academic Tutoring
OASES trains its staff and U.C. Berkeley student volunteers to provide age-appropriate and grade-level specific academic tutoring that is skills-based and aligned with the school-day curriculum. LEAP provides academic assistance in a variety of subjects, with a specific focus on literacy and math with an effectively low tutor to student ratio of 1:1 to 1:4.
Enrichment and Leadership Workshops
OASES provides a wide variety of enrichment opportunities that often are not offered during the school-day such as Girls' Sports Empowerment, Diversity Education, Youth Leadership, Multimedia Arts, Creative Writing, Health and Nutrition, Martial Arts, Financial Literacy, and much more.
Literacy Projects
With a large English Language Learner population in this community, LEAP strengthens literacy skills through the following strategies:
- READING IN SMALL GROUPS– Targeted youth read in small groups with guest volunteers to build and strengthen literacy skills.
- FAMILY LITERACY NIGHTS – Opportunities for parents to engage in literacy activities with their children, including literacy games, puzzles, and arts and crafts
- FIELD TRIPS– OASES takes youth to visit the Main Library and other media outlets.
- STORYTELLING BY DIVERSE CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHORS AND LIBRARIANS on a regular basis to youth and families; reading contests and book giveaways.
- WRITING PROJECTS – Reading and writing go hand in hand. Youth in the program practice writing journaling, summaries writing, and drafting letters.
