Program Descriptions

PASSPORT Program (1st-2nd grade)

The Passport Program provides full, comprehensive, daily after-school programming for elementary-aged youth in the 1st – 2nd grades.  With a focus on primary-aged youths, OASES Volunteers help students build basic reading and writing skills.

  • Tutor 1st-2nd graders
  • Time: Monday – Friday 4-6pm
  • Student-to-tutor ratio: ~4:1
  • 6-8 Volunteers per day
  • Meet at Lincoln Recreation Center – 250 10th Street, Oakland, CA

LEAP Program (3rd-5th grade)


LEAP provides academic assistance in a variety of subjects, with a specific focus on literacy and math with an effectively low tutor to student ratio of 1:1 to 1:4. As the first OASES site, OASES Volunteers help develop students’ reading and writing skills during Reading/Journal Time. Afterwards, Volunteers tutor students during Homework Hour.

  • Tutor 3rd-5th graders
  • Time: Monday-Thursday 4-6pm
  • Student-to-tutor ratio: 1:1 or 4:1
  • Up to 35 volunteers per day

LEAP Workshop (3rd-5th grade)

OASES provides a wide variety of enrichment opportunities that often are not offered during the school-day such as Girls’ Sports Empowerment, Diversity Education, Youth Leadership, Multimedia Arts, Creative Writing, Health and Nutrition, Martial Arts, Financial Literacy, and much more.

  • Time: Fridays 4-6pm

LIGHTHOUSE (K-6th grade)

Lighthouse Community Charter School was founded in the Oakland community 12 years ago. It’s mission is to prepare a diverse K-12 student population for college or a career of their choice by equipping each child with the knowledge, skills, and principles to be a self-motivated, lifelong learner.

Partnering with Lighthouse’s after-school program, “Safe Harbor,” OASES Volunteers tutor students during Homework Hour and then work with students during Enrichment Workshop.

  • Tutor K-6th graders
  • Monday-Thursday 4-6pm
  • Student-to-tutor ratio: 5-10:1 (with accompanied staff instructor)
  • 4-5 volunteers per day

RISE Program (6th-8th grade)

Part of Westlake’s Eagle Village Community Center (EVCC), OASES Volunteers provide academic and social support by tutoring students during Homework Hour and mentoring students during cultural and recreational Enrichment Workshops.

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (2:30pm – 6pm)
  • Wednesday (2:0opm – 5:30pm)
  • 2 – 4 volunteers per day (total 8 – 16/wk)
  • Accompanied by a staff instructor, volunteers work with a classroom of students
  • Student-to-tutor ratio ~ 5-10:1

SOAR Program (9th-12th grade)

With more than six high schools throughout Oakland, SOAR gathers students from different areas and provides guidance for youth to support their navigation through high school and preparation for life after school. OASES Volunteers help students work on their homework and provides information about the community, college, and career.

SOAR has 2 Tutorial Programs: 1) Axiom 2) Tyro. Axiom is reserved for students who are more proficient in English and Tyro is reserved for students who are recent immigrants to the United States. Furthermore, SOAR also has a Mentorship Program for students in both Axiom and Tyro.

  • Tutor 9th-12th graders
  • Monday – Thursday 4-6pm
  • Student-to-tutor Ratio – 1:1 or 5:1
  • 3-5 volunteers per day

SOAR Mentorship Program (9th-12th grade)

Provides personalized mentor relationships for high school students related to their academic, career, or extracurricular interests. Matches volunteers with high school students (1:1 ratio) to inspire them to pursure their dreams. Mentors are paired with the same high school students for at least one semester.

  • 11 week commitment
  • At minimum 3 hours a week (on and offsite meetings)
  • Mentorship event
  • Mentorship presentation at the end of the semester
