About

History

OASES was formed in 1983 by a small group of students from U.C. Berkeley who grew up around the Oakland Chinatown area.  Our original group of volunteers believed in the need to increase educational and social support for immigrant youth in Oakland.  In 1991, OASES became a non-profit organization.  And steadily the Volunteer Program grew from a small group of volunteers to a large team of 250+ volunteers per semester.

Today, OASES serves the diverse families around the Oakland Chinatown area.  With a rough total of 400 low-income youths in our K-12 after school programs, OASES Volunteers play a tremendous role in ensuring that OASES’ mission is met everyday.  Through our Volunteers’ commitment in providing individualized tutoring and mentoring or assisting in leadership/enrichment workshops, OASES continues to make an impact on the lives of Oakland youths and families.

Mission Statement

OASES’ mission is to empower students with limited resources through education, mentorship and service to strengthen the Oakland community.
