OASES Replicates Its Cost–Efficient Afterschool Model to a New Public School- March 2007
In 2007, OASES was asked to implement its cost–efficient Afterschool Model to a new public school- Cleveland Elementary.
In 2005-06, only 18% of Cleveland students attended the on-campus afterschool program.
OASES QUEST will increase the number of youth served from 60 to 90, and serve 28% of all Cleveland students. OASES QUEST meets the need for Cleveland to have a comprehensive academic support, recreation, enrichment and arts afterschool program. Further, in order to increase the self-sufficiency of youth from low-income households, QUEST will provide enrichment that meets their specific needs, such as financial literacy. Cleveland Principal also cited the pressing need for youth to develop awareness of different cultures. Therefore, diversity education will be introduced for the first time at Cleveland, in order to promote greater appreciation for people from different backgrounds.
OASES was honored to be selected out of four total agencies interviewed by Cleveland. OASES is an excellent fit because Cleveland sought a partner to specifically provide cultural education, technology, and arts programs, and OASES has over a decade of experience providing these programs. Second, Cleveland was attracted to OASES’ model of success in recruiting and training tutors from UC Berkeley, as well as OASES’ cultural competent techniques of working with youth and families. OASES is well-suited to serve Cleveland because of OASES’ extensive experience working with English Language Learners in ethnically homogenous and diverse schools.
